About me

Malte Gerhold is a Sciana member and joined the Health Foundation in May 2022 as Director of Innovation & Improvement.

He was previously the Executive Director of Strategy and Intelligence at the Care Quality Commission, the quality regulator for health and care services in England. He is responsible for the organisation's strategy, methodology, data and analytics, and communications. He joined CQC in 2013 as director of strategy and policy, and was appointed to the Board in 2017. He has a particular interest in changing the role of regulation to better enable innovation and improvement. Malte started his career as a strategy consultant, before working as an adviser at the British Prime Minister's Delivery Unit, from where he was appointed deputy director of the Strategy Unit at the Department of Health. Before joining CQC, he lived and worked in Sierra Leone for just under three years, leading a team advising the president on the implementation of the government's priorities in health care, energy, agriculture and investment. Malte has a B.Sc. from the London School of Economics and a Ph.D. from the University of Oxford.
