We were able to achieve all our key planned activities within an ambitious business plan. We launched a number of items such as Safer Clinical Systems and Closing the Gap award scheme. We achieved a step change in our ability to influence government, most notably around the English Department of Health’s Next Stage Review.
Safer Clinical Systems
We have taken Safer Clinical Systems from a concept to a reality with a new way of working and sites in place.
Patient safety
The second phase of the Safer Patients Initiative came to an end but the work is being systematically sustained through the campaigns in England and Wales and national programmes in Scotland and Northern Ireland; through our safety network; and via work with a selection of strategic health authorities. We are really pleased that our work on patient safety appears to be developing a life of its own.
MaiKhanda
The Board agreed a second phase of our work in Malawi. As we launched phase two in March 2009 we were seeing signs of positive change and early results.
Engaging with Quality Initiative
We played an important role in advocating for changes that were made to the management of national clinical audit arrangements in England, via our Engaging with Quality Initiative. We worked with a number of royal colleges to extend their thinking about quality and how it can be improved.
Darzi’s NHS Next Stage Review
We significantly influenced the Prime Minister’s NHS Next Stage Review led by Lord Darzi bringing our learning to bear on the process and very directly influencing the direction of government policy from the moment the review was announced. Since its publication we have worked to influence a number of the strands of work that are being developed by the Department of Health in England.
Co-creating Health
Our work on patient engagement has developed considerably with more clarity and focus brought to our Co-creating Health scheme and the work to develop our new schemes.
Leadership development
We have also helped set a new frame of reference for leadership development in the NHS by pioneering a closer relationship between leadership and improvement.
Stroke
Our work on stroke has been a good example of where the Health Foundation has brought together the evidence, people and practice to strengthen the impact of a range of existing foundation supported activities.
