2007 saw all five of the Health Foundation’s strategic aims deliver full programmes of work and reach full effectiveness. We continued to build constructive links across the health sector and used our unique positioning to broker relationships with policy, academic, clinical and managerial groups.

Notable achievements

Safer Patients Initiative

Our Safer Patients Initiative continued to generate real results and is now poised to offer national spread across all four home countries.

New award schemes

We developed two multi-million pound award schemes, Co-Creating Health and Engaging with Quality in Primary Care. In November the first Co-Creating Health National Forum launched an ambitious programme that supports patients, clinicians and managers to improve the outcomes for patients. The launch of our Engaging with Quality in Primary Care scheme supports the work of nine teams who are leading projects to improve care across a range of primary and community services on a very diverse range of health issues.

Leadership schemes

Our leadership schemes are winning valued plaudits; organisational sponsors offered strong endorsements of the quality of the programme and its impact on their staff. Our shared leadership intervention to improve the quality of healthcare for black and minority ethnic (BME) groups demonstrated The Health Foundation’s commitment to innovative thinking and radical ideas to resolve ongoing systemic challenges.

Patient safety agenda

We further progressed our championing of the patient safety agenda through active leadership and a real commitment to change. Strong participation in the Institute for Healthcare Improvement’s International Forum demonstrated our key role.

Our NHS, our future

The time we invested in preparation work for our submission to Lord Darzi’s report, Our NHS, our future was rewarded by extremely positive feedback and the opportunity to build policy links in 2008.

Evaluation reports

We commissioned five independent evaluations developing and strengthening our approach to evaluation.

QQUIP

Evidence from our Quest for Quality and Improved Performance was presented to the Health Select Committee’s inquiry into the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence and has stimulated international interest.

New strategic plan

The new strategic plan for 2008/12 delineates our direction, aims, ambitions, and activities. Our management of risk and the review of senior management have strengthened the organisation’s ability and will to deliver our ambitious future plans.
