Professor Deirdre Kelly

Deirdre Kelly is Professor of Paediatric Hepatology at the University of Birmingham and Director of the Liver Unit, Birmingham Children’s Hospital, which she set up in 1989 to provide a national service for children with liver disease. Deirdre was Medical Director of Birmingham Children’s Hospital from 2000–07, chairing the Clinical Standards Committee and the Ethical Advisory Group and is currently Director of Research and Development.

Deirdre is President of the European Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition; Chair of the National Advisory Committee for the Child Health Review (Confidential Enquiry for Maternal and Child Health) and Commissioner on the Healthcare Commission. She is Chairman of the Lunar Society.

Deirdre was President of the British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (2004–07); President of the International Paediatric Transplant Association (2002–05); and Chair of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health Advisory Committee for Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition (2004–07).
