Chris is professor of health policy and management at the Health Services Management Centre, University of Birmingham.

He was seconded to the Department of Health between 2000 and 2004 where he was director of the Strategy Unit, working with Ministers on the reform of the NHS.

Chris has served as an advisor to the WHO, the World Bank, and the health departments of New Zealand and Sweden. In the UK, he has advised the House of Commons Health Committee, the BMA, the NHS Confederation, the BDA and the Audit Commission.

Chris is a member of the Governors’ Council of the Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust and a member of the board of the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation. He is the author or editor of 18 books and numerous articles on health policy in the UK and in the comparative context.

A Fellow of the Academy of Medical Sciences and an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, Chris was awarded a CBE in 2004 in recognition of his services to the NHS.
