Stephen Thornton
Chief Executive
Stephen Thornton is Chief Executive of the Health Foundation, the only independent foundation focusing exclusively on improving the quality of healthcare in the UK.
He has more than 20 years' management experience in the NHS, having worked at hospital, community health, commissioning, regional and national levels of the service. The Foundation runs a major programme to improve maternal and neonatal health in Malawi and Stephen is a trustee of the Aquaid Lifeline Fund, a Cambridge-based charity providing orphan care in that country.
Stephen was a Commissioner on the Healthcare Commission for three years and is currently a Non-Executive Director at Monitor (the independent regulator of NHS Foundation trusts). He was appointed a CBE in 2001. He was appointed to the National Quality Board as an expert member in March 2009.
