Clinician Scientist Fellowships

In brief

Our Clinician Scientist Fellowships provide five-year funding for academic research proposals that will improve patient care.

Working with the Academy of Medical Sciences, our Clinician Scientist Fellowships support research alongside clinical practice. The programme focuses on ‘translational’ research - that is, research which will result in direct improvements in medical practice.

The research is in disciplines where there is an identified national shortage of research expertise, including anaesthesia, paediatrics, pathology, psychiatry, radiology and surgery. However, individuals from other medical disciplines are also considered, and the programme encourages applications from people working across disciplinary boundaries who may have difficulty winning funding from elsewhere.

For the clinicians taking part in the programme, the benefits include:

  • Full salary replacement funding for five years and an allowance for research expenses.
  • Protected time allowing them to pursue academic research alongside clinical practice.
  • An innovative leadership development programme to make them more effective at influencing improvements in healthcare.
  • Access to the Academy of Medical Sciences' network and mentoring scheme.

The organisations that support our participants through their fellowships also benefit, thanks to a raised profile in academic medicine.
