Generation Q

What we offer

GenerationQ 2011 is now closed for applications. We will re-open in 2013. To receive notification of the next round and other opportunities to get involved in our work, please register for email alerts.

GenerationQ is designed to equip fellows with the skills to drive forward and influence improvements across services and organisations.

It is a fully-funded part-time programme. For those completing a postgraduate certificate or diploma, we anticipate an average of 10–25 hours of personal study per month over the 18 months of the programme. For an MSc, the time period is two years.

The programme provides:

  • an innovative learning experience, including residential leadership forums, the support of individual executive coaching, action learning in facilitated peer groups, the opportunity to engage with systems beyond health and extensive feedback
  • the opportunity to put into practice a significant improvement project in the fellow’s place of work
  • the opportunity to work closely with, and learn from, a multidisciplinary group of peers from diverse backgrounds in healthcare
  • academic rigour and recognition.

GenerationQ covers the four domains of improvement leadership: contextual, relational, technical and personal.

Fellows learn about the evidence base that underpins leadership for quality improvement, and how to apply improvement science, leadership and change theories.

Fellows develop personal skills and strategies for resilience, equipping them to confront the main challenges facing healthcare leaders today. GenerationQ improves their ability to:

  • recognise and use the current uncertainties in the NHS as a source of creativity and innovation
  • lead others in complex change when resources have been cut and people are feeling under pressure
  • make informed and explicit choices that promote the culture and conditions for quality improvement.

“The programme has been an eye-opener for me, in terms of understanding leadership, the components of quality and how we manage complexity. It has helped me to influence what happens within my organisation.”

Dr Olu Orugun, Clinical Director/Consultant Physician, North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust and Health Foundation Fellow, GenerationQ 2010

I am retired old GP with 40 years of work--I am knowledgeable on preventive medicine and healthy life styles--I have rarely used the NHS but have been paying for it at great cost. Should there not be some credit for healthy patients and an increase in healthy life styles
I appreciate that this programme is aimed at people who hold senior positions within their organisations. What advice would you offer me??
I am a Learning Disability Nurse with over 25 years experience and am keen to influence change and practice within health care for people with learning disabilities.
Whilst I do not hold a 'senior' position within my organisation, I do feel my role involves encouraging others to improve the services they offer and influence a change in attitude towards people with learning disabilities.
I consider I demonstrate leadership qualities but would love to develop these further.
All suggestions would be very welcome!!
Dear GenerationQ,

May i ask:
When is the potential start date for the next course?

Owen
Hi Owen,

We have not yet set the dates for the next round of the programme but we will do do by the autumn. So, please get in touch then.

Regards
Amjad
can you tell me where we are with this? Thanks Tracy
could you give any update on dates for the next round of the programme?
Many thanks
Fiona.
I was so lucky to be successful in applying to the Generation Q programme in 2011 and have been living and breathing leadership and quality improvement science ever since.

It is hard work, and I have to be very disciplined to make sure that I do the work required to make the most of the learning opportunities offered, but it is also easily the most challenging and the most inspiring thing I have ever done in my professional career. I have learned so much that I have been able to apply to my every day practice already.

I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who feels passionately about their role in the providing high quality healthcare services.
