Leadership Fellows 2005-07

Dr Owen Bowden-Jones, Consultant Psychiatrist, Central North West London Mental Health NHS Trust

Owen graduated from Birmingham University Medical School in 1992, became a member of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in 1999 and completed his MSc in Clinical Psychiatric research in 2000. He has been in his current post, working in the field of Addiction Psychiatry, since October 2003. Owen is Clinical Lead for two large services in the London borough of Kensington & Chelsea dealing with alcohol and drug addiction. In addition, he is a member of the NICE implementation and medicine management trust committees and holds committee posts on two national drug strategy forums.

Christine Caldwell, Assistant Chief Nurse, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children NHS Trust


Chris qualified as a registered nurse in 1988 and began her career as a Children’s Nurse in 1990. In 1993 Chris graduated with an MSc in Psychology and Health and went on to qualify as a Registered Nurse Teacher at the Institute of Advanced Nurse Education, Royal College of Nursing. As well as her current role as Assistant Chief Nurse, Chris is Associate Lecturer in Nursing at London South Bank University and Tutor-Counsellor for the Leadership for Child Health Nurses module on the BSc (Hons) Child Health Nursing by Distance Learning course at the RCN Institute, University of Manchester.

Sorrel Cosens, Assistant Service Manager, General Medicine, Lothian University Hospitals Division


After completing her MA (Hons) in English Language & Literature at Edinburgh University, Sorrel went on to achieve a postgraduate certificate in Management (Public and Non-Profit) in 2003. She achieved PRINCE2 Project Management with the Office of Government Commerce in May 2004. In her current role, Sorrel supports the management of five clinical services in medicine, ensuring financial, quality and activity targets are met in line with the division’s operational plan and that the standards of service agreed with the Health Board are met.

Carol Cottingham, Transformation Programme Manager, Lincolnshire Transformation Programme, Lincs South West Primary Care Trust


Carol has a background in Practice Management and has worked with PCG/Ts since their establishment. She holds diplomas in both Practice Management and Management Studies, and has also completed the Office for Public Management’s NHS Leaders Programme. In her current role, Carol is responsible for leading the long-term conditions programme across Lincolnshire. A key achievement of Carol’s is the development and adoption of a number of models of care for long-term conditions (e.g. COPD and heart failure) which are currently being implemented across Lincolnshire. These are starting to result in increased access to services in primary care plus a demonstrable reduction in emergency admissions and a reduced length of hospital stay.

Dr Tim Craft, Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care Medicine and Deputy Medical Director, Royal United Hospital, Bath NHS Trust


Tim graduated in medicine in 1983 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Anaesthetists in 1989. He has been in his current post since 1993 and is one of a small number of consultants responsible for the day-to-day running of the Critical Care Unit at the Royal United Hospital. This involves him leading a highly developed team of nurses, therapists, pharmacists and trainee doctors from all specialties in caring for the sickest patients in the hospital. In addition, Tim is the trust’s Deputy Medical Director with particular responsibility for operational and patient service delivery. In 2005, he was seconded on a part-time basis to the position of Director of Patient Service Delivery, leading and line managing the three clinical divisions at the Royal United Hospital.

Beth Malloy, Planning and Performance Manager, Belfast City Hospital Trust


Beth graduated with a degree in Public Administration from the University of Nottingham in 1991. She also gained a certificate and diploma in Management via the Open University and completed a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) at the University of Ulster in 1999. In 2000, Beth attended a specialized leadership programme at Harvard University, Massachusetts, USA. Beth has been in her current post since 2002 and is responsible for improving the provision of services for patients.

Dr Brian Montgomery, Associate Medical Director – Service Modernisation, Lothian NHS Board


Brian completed a BSc in Medical Sciences in 1979 and graduated in Medicine in 1982. He worked in Training Grade Doctor Posts from 1982 – 1986 and was Principal in General Practice at East Calder Medical Practice from 1986 to 2000 before moving to the position of Medical Director with West Lothian Healthcare NHS Trust. In his current role, Brian provides clinical leadership to NHS Lothian’s modernisation and service redesign programme.

Rachel Newson, Director of Commissioning, Norfolk & Waveney Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust


Rachel qualified as a registered mental health nurse in 1987. She completed an MSc in Health Services Management in 1996 and a BSc in Health Studies in 1993. As part of her current role as Director of Commissioning, Rachel is responsible for modernising services within mental health. Recently she managed two major new build service developments, and continues to lead work on developing local cost effective services to establish local care pathways and to avoid out of area placements.

Rebecca Pulford, Unit Manager, Emergency Assessment Unit, Essex Rivers Health Care Trust


Rebecca received her Nursing Education Certificate in 1992 and a Higher National Diploma in Nurse Practice in 1998. In 2003 she achieved a BSc (Hons) in Nursing Studies from the RCN Institute and in May 2005 an Advanced Diploma in Health and Safety. Rebecca has a broad range of nursing experience but has specialised particularly in cardiac nursing. She has been in her current post since 2003 where her responsibilities include managing and developing nursing and operational services to deliver high quality, safe and cost effective care.

Tom Ricketts, Nurse Consultant in Psychotherapy and Research, Sheffield Care Trust


Tom graduated from the University of Reading in 1980 with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and then qualified as a Registered Mental Nurse in 1985. In 1994 he was accredited as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and since 2000 has held the position of Honorary Research Fellow at the School of Health and Related Research, University of Sheffield. In 2002, Tom achieved a PhD from Sheffield Hallam University for research into problem gambling. In his current role as Nurse Consultant, Tom leads on the delivery and improvement of psychotherapy-informed treatments across the trust. In addition, he plays a key role in the development, management and dissemination of psychological therapies research.

Dr Sarah Riding, Principal in General Practice, Shropshire County PCT


Sarah graduated with a degree in medicine in 1987 before achieving a diploma in Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 1989 and a diploma in Family Planning in 1991. In 1995, Sarah qualified as a GP Registrar Trainer and in 2005 she qualified as a GP Appraiser. Sarah has been a partner in her practice since 2000. She provides general medical services to the 7,000 practice patients including holding booked surgeries, telephone consultations and visits. Sarah is also practice development lead, nursing development lead and GMS2 lead. As commissioning lead for the practice, she has led seven local practices in forming the locality commissioning group which she now chairs. In addition, Sarah is responsible for the medical care of the residents in a local care home and offers enhanced services in family planning, women’s health and minor surgery.

Dr Joyce Russell, Consultant Orthodontist & Clinical Director of North West England, Isle of Man & North Wales Cleft Service, Royal Liverpool Children’s NHS Trust


Joyce qualified in dentistry in 1981 and completed her PhD in dental research in 1988. She is a Fellow of the Dental Faculties both of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow and of the Royal College of Surgeons, England. Joyce has been a Consultant Orthodontist at the Royal Liverpool Children’s NHS Trust since 1997 and Clinical Director since May 2005. In addition to her clinical duties, Joyce is involved in establishing a new, improved service for children, young people and adults with congenital anomalies of clefts of the lip and/or palate.

Dr Steven Ryan, Medical Director & Consultant Paediatrician, Royal Liverpool Children’s NHS Trust


Steven graduated in medicine in 1981 from Leeds University and became a fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics in 1997. He has been a Consultant at the Royal Liverpool Children’s NHS Trust since 1991 and Medical Director since 2004. In his current post, Steven’s main responsibilities include clinical governance with a particular focus on clinical effectiveness, infection control and medicines management. Steven is also Executive Lead for Research and responsible for the medical workforce in terms of job planning, appraisal and performance management.

Ann Slee, Lead Clinician, Electronic Prescribing Programme, NHS Connecting for Health (NHS CfH), Leeds


Ann graduated in pharmacy in 1986. In 1990, she attained a post graduate diploma in Clinical Pharmacy and in 1993 a Master of Science. Ann is a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and has worked in a variety of both clinical and managerial roles, latterly as Director of Pharmacy at Conwy & Denbighshire NHS Trust. She has been involved in the introduction, development and evaluation of electronic prescribing and automation into practice and has been at the forefront of medicines management developments in the UK. She is currently working for NHS Connecting for Health, bringing this expertise to bear within the National Programme for IT.

Dr Alison Walker, Medical Director, West Yorkshire Metropolitan Ambulance Service (WYMAS) and Consultant in Emergency Medicine and Pre-Hospital Care, Mid Yorkshire Trust (MYT)


Alison graduated in dentistry in June 1987 and in medicine in June 1995. She is a Consultant in Emergency Medicine at MYT and has been Medical Director for WYMAS since June 2005. As Consultant in Emergency Medicine, Alison has clinical responsibilities at Pinderfields and Pontefract Hospitals and leads on pre-hospital care, research, emergency medicine ultrasound and the Senior House Officer induction course. As Medical Director, Alison chairs the West Yorkshire Emergency Care Practitioner Steering Group and is the clinical lead for Emergency Care Practitioners. She also chairs the WYMAS Clinical Audit and Effectiveness Group and is lead for child protection and infection control at the trust.

Elisabeth Windas, Service Improvement Manager, Hartlepool Primary Care Trust


Elisabeth’s background is in nursing and she qualified as a registered general nurse in 1983. She achieved a diploma in Higher Education Health Studies in 1998 and a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in 2003. Elisabeth has been in her current post as Service Improvement Manager since May 2005. Elisabeth’s main area of responsibility is working with healthcare professionals to achieve improvements in services. In addition, she is responsible for developing and delivering training programmes and university lectures to build the capability for service improvement.
