Healthcare spending and the link to outcomes
There is high variability in spending across the 152 primary care trusts in England, explains Vin McLouglin, Director of Performance Analysis at the Health Foundation, in a HSJ data briefing.
The briefing, on the link between spending and outcomes using programme budgeting data, was published online on 15 January 2009. Vin explains that this variation enables the study to examine whether increased expenditure is associated with improved health outcomes.
The data are from the third in a series of Quest for Quality and Improved Performance reports, which all focus on the link between spending and outcomes in the English NHS. The third report The link between healthcare spending and health outcomes for the new English primary care trusts written by Stephen Martin, Nigel Rice and Peter Smith at York University will be published in February 2009.
