Initial results from the Scottish Patient Safety Fellowship Programme

The Commonwealth Fund has published a blog detailing the successes and future objectives of the Scottish Patient Safety Fellowship Programme. The programme, financially supported by the Health Foundation in its first two phases, aims to reduce mortality by 15% and patient harm by 30% by the end of 2012, and aims to achieve all its targets before 2024. The programme is beginning to deliver results for patients as follows:

• a 7% reduction in hospital standardized mortality ratios;
• a 73% reduction in central-line infections;
• a 43% reduction in ventilator-associated pneumonias; and
• a 72% reduction in C. difficile bacterial infections in intensive care units and a 58% reduction in general wards.
