Patient Safety Congress 2010

25 May 2010

The Health Foundation is proud to be supporting this year’s Patient Safety Congress – the largest event in the UK covering all aspects of patient safety and brining together experts from the UK and beyond. As well as plenary speakers, sessions will showcase innovative work from across healthcare where people teams are working to improve the quality and safety.

As an active sponsor we have worked on developing this year's programme with the NHS Institute, the National Patient Safety Agency and the Department of Health, and alongside the organisers HSJ and Nursing Times.

Over 900 visitors on 25 and 26 May will have the opportunity to hear from our programmes and partners. Stephen Thornton, our Chief Executive, joins Professor Bernard Crump, Chief Executive of the NHS Institute for Innovation and Improvement, and Dr Suzette Woodward, Director of Patient Safety at the National Patient Safety Agency, in a plenary session on the key commitments from those driving innovation and best practice in patient safety.

We will also be launching a number of publications at the Congress, including:

How safe are clinical systems?

This study examines the extent, type and causes of failures in reliability in different healthcare systems: failures which have the potential to create risk or cause patient harm.

The team found that a significant proportion of the reliability failures were associated with risks to patient safety. For example, their findings in outpatient clinics imply that almost 10 million British patients are seen each year with clinical information missing; two million of whom are exposed to risks as perceived by the clinic doctors.

Patient safety snapshot: Transforming organisational approaches to deliver safer patient care

Our programmes of work on patient safety have demonstrated that care processes can be improved to deliver reliable, safe, high quality care. However, to achieve success, the priority must be to encourage a positive will to change, ensure leadership attention on safety and put into practice evidence-based measures designed to make routine care as reliable as possible.

This publication gives a brief overview of our work across patient safety. It includes background information, our work in this area, our learning so far, key priorities and how to get involved.
