The Health Foundation has launched a new supplement today in the Health Service Journal that explores how transforming the relationship between people who use services and those who provide them can be a driver for improving quality.
The supplement, The patient will see you now, presents research and evidence, showcases good practice case studies and stimulates discussion which encourages people to get involved in shifting the culture.
The Health Foundation knows that to achieve the best health outcomes and experience, people need to play an active role in their own care and for the support they are given to be responsive to their needs. That is why we’re seeking to radically transform the relationship between people who use services and those who provide them.
A care system that treats communities as units of need and leaves passive patients waiting pointlessly to be told what to do is an inefficient and ineffective system. Therefore, it is time for a radical rethink and a need to change the way health services are designed and delivered.
The supplement demonstrates that there are already pockets of good practice which have the potential to kick start a culture change in the NHS.
Stephen Thornton, Chief Executive, said 'The Health Foundation wants to help catalyse this transformation. We want to use our strengths to build your strengths and our capacities to catalyse and unlock your capacities. We want to work together to learn and demonstrate how to make improving person-centred quality the heart of the NHS of the tomorrow that starts today.
'As the commentators in this supplement highlight, we need to change the way we see ourselves, we need to change our mindsets and our roles, our behaviours and the culture of healthcare. We hope that this supplement will help to spark this transformation.'
