A new publishing partnership between BMJ Group and the Health Foundation is set to strengthen quality improvement and patient safety in healthcare.
The Health Foundation, which has a longstanding reputation for supporting innovation and quality improvement in healthcare, will become joint owner with BMJ Group of its leading title in the field, BMJ Quality and Safety, from April 1.
BMJ Quality and Safety (formerly Quality and Safety in Health Care) is the highest impact journal in the arena of quality improvement and patient safety, and moved from bi-monthly to monthly publication in January 2011.
The new partnership aims to advance research and inspire fresh thinking in a rapidly burgeoning area of interest to clinicians, medical managers, and policy makers around the globe.
In tandem with the new partnership, the title has appointed a new editor in chief, Kaveh Shojania, Director of the University of Toronto’s Center for Patient Safety and Associate Professor of Medicine at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center, Toronto, Canada.
Professor Shojania takes over the position from Dr David Stevens, of the Quality Literature Program, Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Care, New Hampshire, USA, who has edited the title since 2004.
The announcement of the new partnership comes as leading thinkers and innovators in the field gather at the
16th International Forum on Quality & Safety in Healthcare from 5-8 April 2011, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
Around 2,500 people from 70 countries are expected to attend this year’s Forum, which has the delivery of better and safer care for less as its theme.
To celebrate the announcement of the new partnership, BMJ Quality and Safety is publishing a special supplement on key aspects of quality improvement in healthcare. Topics include what type of knowledge is required and how to engage clinicians and others in the process.
The supplement,
'Knowledge for Improvement, Papers from the Vin McLoughlin Symposium on the Epistemology of Improving Health Care, UK, April 12-16, 2010', has contributions from leading global thinkers and practitioners in the field from North America, Europe, Scandinavia, and the UK. It is based on a symposium held at Cliveden, Berkshire, last April.
Commenting on the announcement, Peter Ashman, Publishing Director of the BMJ and BMJ Journals at BMJ Group said, ‘The area of quality and safety is becoming increasingly important and is a major strategic focus for BMJ Group.
‘The relaunch of the journal as a BMJ-branded title with Dr Shojania as Editor, and now the co-ownership of the journal with the Health Foundation, strengthen our commitment to this vital area and enhances our existing BMJ Group portfolio of activities in quality improvement and patient safety.’
Martin Marshall, Clinical Director and Director of Research & Development, at the Health Foundation added, ‘We are very excited to be working with BMJ Group on the new BMJ Quality and Safety journal. This is a great opportunity for us to develop a journal with a focus on improving quality, which will engage academic audiences as well as wider audiences of clinical and managerial leaders, practitioners, and policy makers.’
He continued, ‘We hope to provide an accessible journal that will be the key resource for leading thinking into quality improvement and the science of improvement.’
