Two new Harkness/Health Foundation Fellowships awarded

The Health Foundation announces today the winners of the prestigious Harkness/Health Foundation Fellowships in Healthcare Policy. The Fellows are Anatole Menon-Johansson, Specialist Registrar in Genitourinary Medicine at Chelsea and Westminster Healthcare NHS Trust and Robbie Foy, Clinical Senior Lecturer in Primary Care at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne and part-time GP.

As part of the Fellowship, Anatole and Robbie will spend a year in the United States conducting projects which will help to influence and shape UK health policy in the future. Anatole’s project will look into the effectiveness of US and UK policies for the treatment of HIV and AIDS, using a range of epidemiological, economic, socio-demographic and legal analysis. Robbie will compare the nature and intensity of quality improvement efforts in the US and UK and will identify gaps and weaknesses that need to be addressed in order to improve patient care.

Stephen Thornton, Chief Executive of The Health Foundation welcomed the two new Fellows by saying; “We were particularly impressed by both proposed projects and plans to disseminate the findings to UK policy makers.”

Both Fellows receive a paid sabbatical from their existing roles and will have the opportunity to mix with leading US health professionals, policy makers and analysts whilst in the US. The Fellows begin work in the States this summer.

Recruitment for the Harkness/Health Foundation Fellowships in Healthcare Policy for 2007-2008 is currently underway. The deadline is 1 September 2006.
