Recognising that medical professionals are sometimes constrained by their cultural norms – the product of education, training and practice which reinforce traditional concepts of the medical role – we want to create the space for doctors and others to consider their role.
The engagement work we are planning in 2012 will seek to understand better the challenges and implications of changing medical roles. We also want to build a commitment to changing roles among both national players and local champions.
We think that helping to reshape medical education within an improvement context will be a major lever for change. We will ensure that educationalists, along with medical students and junior doctors, are centrally involved in the engagement project.
