Dr Jonathon Gray is the Chair and Director of the National Institute for Innovation and Improvement in at Auckland University in New Zealand, as well as the Director of the Centre for Health Services Innovation and Improvement at Counties Manukau District Health Board. Prior to this, he held the role of Consultant and Senior Lecturer in medical genetics at Cardiff and Vale NHS Trust where he worked on the 1000 Lives Campaign.

Jonathon believes that small changes are extremely important to quality improvement, especially when they lead to positive results, as it provides a good foundation to build further change.

His work at the IHI has enabled Jonathan to recognise that the NHS is lacking a framework to help clinicians understand what they do well and areas where they can improve. This is fundamental to bring a more rounded view of quality, recognise the excellent work already being done and to create a plan for future quality improvement.

Jonathon tries to use some of the rules he learnt at the IHI every day, ensuring that he spreads his enthusiasm for quality improvement amongst his colleagues. He aims to constantly challenge himself to by stepping outside his comfort zone, and trying to use models from other industries that may be adapted and applied to quality improvement within healthcare.
