The evaluation of The Health Foundation, Academy of Medical Sciences (AMS) and Royal College of Pathologists (RCPath) Clinician Scientist Fellowship (CSF) scheme identifies robust output and outcome measures for such schemes that will be valuable to others wishing to evaluate and demonstrate the success of similar schemes.

The evaluation findings have been used by The Health Foundation to make midcourse changes to the CSF scheme and have informed the development of a new CSF scheme to support clinical academic leaders.

Early indications suggest that the CSF scheme is successfully meeting its objectives and contributing towards achieving the strategic objectives of The Health Foundation. A final evaluation will be available in 2012.

CSF fellows have attracted over £4.2 million in additional research funding (including £2 million for scanning equipment in Sheffield) from 29 different funding bodies, predominantly for staff, research consumables and equipment, and the CSF scheme has been an important contributor.

There is a very high degree of coherence between scheme design and implementation that suggests the scheme is likely to achieve its objectives; however, further support from The Health Foundation, AMS and RCPath will help to maximise the potential benefits.
