Improvement leadership update

Published: June 2009

This update explains our approach to leadership for improvement.

The right leadership is critical to the transformation of health services across the UK. This will be even more the case in the challenging times ahead.

Both leadership and quality improvement are currently high on the agenda. However, there needs to be a clearer link between the two. We have defined improvement leadership as initiating, managing and creating with others a vision and culture for improving quality of care and, also with others, designing, producing and delivering this vision in expert ways.

Our fundamental priorities for developing leadership in the NHS are to:

  • create supportive environments
  • encourage individuals from a range of disciplines, professional backgrounds and boundaries to learn together
  • make improvement quality the objective of leadership development.
