Honorary Consultant Physician, R&D Director
Organisation: Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust
Alice Turner is a GenerationQ Fellow and Honorary Consultant Physician in Respiratory Medicine and Research and Development Director at Heart of England NHS Foundation Trust.
She is Trust lead for her sub-specialty area of COPD and directs research and development activity. Alice is also a Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Birmingham and member of the British Thoracic Society specialty advisory group for COPD.
As well as leading on the development of regional guidelines for COPD, a key part of Alice's role has involved leading her trust in a national project to introduce COPD care bundles. Her experience of the benefits of effective, sustainable change during this service development initiative motivated her to get involved in further quality improvement work and participate in GenerationQ. The programme interested Alice ‘because it allies formal leadership training to networking with like-minded peers, alongside practical workplace-based, observational learning about how to initiate and maintain change’.
Alice hopes that the programme will give her a better understanding of how to make change happen in non-clinical areas of the NHS, such as policy-making and engagement in research. She is keen to apply her learning to further her leadership skills at a regional and national level in COPD, and has volunteered to start a regional quality improvement initiative for respiratory trainees in her deanery.
Alice also plans to lead on a project to improve integrated COPD care by making more specialised care available in the community to prevent exacerbations and hospital admissions. Alice hopes to ‘foster enthusiasm in primary care for service improvements focused on respiratory medicine’.
