Clara Day Consultant Nephrologist and Associate Medical Director for Finance

About me

Clara is a GenerationQ Fellow and Consultant Nephrologist and Associate Medical Director for Finance at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

She leads the Trust’s haemodialysis programme, which is the largest in the UK. As Associate Medical Director for Finance, she leads clinical-financial collaboration at the Trust to ensure high-quality, cost-effective care.

At a regional level she is Clinical Director of the NHS England West Midlands Renal Network, which has involved leading quality improvement, including a comprehensive peer review process, and projects to increase home dialysis and standardise post-transplant care, including transfer to a biosimilar transplant immunosuppression drug, saving £2m a year.

She has been at the Trust since 2008, before which she was a Specialist Registrar in renal medicine at West Midlands Deanery for 10 years. She is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and has just been appointed Chair of the NHS England Renal Clinical Reference Group, which leads nationally on renal policy and value.

Clara is using the GenerationQ fellowship to help her deliver a programme at the Trust to increase general financial awareness in clinical teams, and to embed the knowledge, skills and information needed into teams that are transforming following a Trust merger.

'I work to provide financial information in an accessible way to clinicians, and act as a translator between clinical and financial teams to ensure helpful dialogue. This programme will extend this work.

'GenerationQ will allow further broadening of my NHS horizons and extension of my learning from others with differing skill sets and experiences.'
