About me
Matt is a GenerationQ Fellow and Consultant Anaesthetist, University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust, and Regional Patient Safety Lead, South West Academic Health Science Network.
He is the lead for safety culture and is responsible for supporting local teams to measure and improve their team safety culture. He is also a regional patient safety lead for the South West Academic Health Science Network (SWAHSN) and Clinical Lead for the national safety culture workstream of the Patient Safety Collaborative.
Matt has an MSc in Quality and Safety, and teaches on two MSc courses at Plymouth Medical School. Matt believes that the GenerationQ fellowship will help him to maximise the opportunity his various career roles give him to support and influence the role of safety culture in health care.
He wants to learn how to adapt his leadership style as he increasingly works across Trust, regional and national boundaries: ‘I need to develop my leadership skills and knowledge, and identify how and when to use different leadership styles in diverse situations.’
A project that Matt is leading on is improving the measured safety culture of teams within the Trust and across the south west, through the use of repeated staff surveys and debriefing. Matt believes that ‘the impact of understanding the key aspects of safety culture across organisations and the health care system has the potential to result in significant gains in patient outcomes, staff metrics and financial savings’.
