Paul Fitzsimmons Deputy Executive Medical Director

About me

Paul is a GenerationQ Fellow and Deputy Executive Medical Director at Liverpool University Hospital.

He previously worked as Care Group Director and Clinical Director for Geriatrics at Royal Liverpool Hospital.

His responsibilities include the ongoing development of a robust governance structure and safety culture, and coordination of system-wide quality improvement projects. Paul recently led a trust-wide clinical prioritisation protocol project to ensure that limited hospital beds are allocated to the people most in need of inpatient care by rapidly identifying those at lowest risk of harm from discharge.

Improving patient care has been the primary driver for his career, from simple quality improvement projects as a trainee, through to high-impact specialty projects as a clinical director and the Trust-wide patient safety and clinical effectiveness projects he now leads: ‘Seeing measurable improvements in patient outcomes and a reduction in harm associated with care is something I find highly rewarding.’

Through the GenerationQ fellowship, Paul hopes to lead such projects more effectively, with a higher profile, wider reach and greater impact. His ambition is to lead the expansion of a clinical quality assurance framework that will provide a rapid, sensitive diagnostic tool to assess the effectiveness of clinical services and their governance structures across the Trust.

Paul hopes this will enable the prioritisation of key areas for quality improvement in each speciality and ‘lead to a culture of continual improvement where clinical governance, performance management and quality improvement are linked seamlessly.’
