About me

Ryan Watkins is a GenerationQ Fellow, and Chief of Service, Children and Women’s Division at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust.

He leads the division, which includes all clinical services at the children’s hospital, neonatology, obstetrics, gynaecology, gynae-oncology and midwifery.

Ryan has worked in the NHS for 27 years and as a consultant for 15 years. He has been clinical lead for children’s services at Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals since 2007. During this time, the children’s hospital moved to its new facility and Ryan was tasked with developing services to fulfil its potential. This required the development of effective collaboration with other hospital trusts to identify and develop those services on behalf of children in Kent, Sussex and Surrey. Children’s services at the Trust were rated ‘outstanding’ by the Care Quality Commission in 2016.

With the support of learning from the GenerationQ fellowship, Ryan will be developing the scope of foetal medicine services provided to women by the Trust, with the aim of improving capability, access, outcomes and experience. 'The project will support the improvement of health care outcomes for women and their babies, notably supporting the target of a reduction in local rates of stillbirth, perinatal and neonatal death.'

Ryan believes GenerationQ will help him lead improvement programmes such as this. 'By better appreciating the factors contributing my own performance, I hope to improve my knowledge, skills and confidence, which will enable me to fulfil my potential as a clinical leader in my field and beyond.'
