Responding to NHS Providers new report, Making the most of the money: Efficiency and long term plan, Jennifer Dixon, Chief Executive at the Health Foundation, said:

‘The views of trust leaders underline what we already know: that business as usual and short-term thinking will not deliver significant savings, reduce waste, or improve the quality of care.

'Significant progress in trusts depends on staff being supported far more to adopt innovation and best practice to make continuous improvements that they and patients can see are needed.

'But just as critical will be investment outside trusts in primary, community and social care to prevent avoidable admissions and allow patients to be discharged earlier from hospital.

'These areas must be a priority for the NHS long term plan, which is currently being drawn up.'
