Commenting on NHS Improvement Q4 Performance statistics, Adam Steventon, Director of Data Analytics at the Health Foundation said:

‘Our research last week revealed that hospitals are treating higher numbers of sicker patients than ever before and the reality is this comes with a price tag.  One in three patients admitted to hospital as an emergency today will have five or more health conditions, compared to one in ten a decade ago.

‘Longer-term investment in both the NHS and social care system is critical to meet the needs of a growing and ageing population with more complex health needs.  To meet increasing demand and improve conditions for staff and patients, spending will need to rise each year by 4 per cent over the next fifteen years, taking us back to pre-austerity funding levels.’
