In response to the NHS performance figures, released today by NHS England, Dr Jennifer Dixon, Chief Executive of the Health Foundation, said: 'These latest figures from November show health services are struggling to deliver the basics, even before colder weather and any upsurge in flu.

'The government is clear that it expects the NHS to meet these targets, but also balance the books and improve services – for example, by increasing seven day working  and improving cancer diagnosis. In some areas of the country, these aspirations may not be realistic, especially where social support for old and frail people is weak with knock-on demand for NHS care.

'Investment in health and social services would help, but isn’t the only answer. It is clear that some NHS providers are meeting targets through good leadership, management, teamwork and collaboration with other providers, not least in social care. NHS Providers need to learn from the best, and be encouraged to do so, if they are to rise to the challenges that inevitably lie ahead.'
