Organisational interventions for stroke

This report examines the organisation and delivery of healthcare for patients with stroke in emergency, acute and post-acute settings.

The report focuses on care for stroke patients in three settings – emergency, acute and post-acute. It also examines evidence of care delivery models for TIAs, or ‘mini strokes’. These fall under preventive care or risk reduction, since patients experiencing TIA are at high risk for stroke.

The authors used a ‘best evidence’ approach to conduct a literature review. They examine guidelines, current practice and evidence in four areas related to the organisation and delivery of healthcare for patients with stroke:

• stroke risk reduction: treatment of TIAs
• adequate access to emergency services for diagnosis and timely initiation of appropriate treatment
• inpatient treatment for acute care
• post-acute rehabilitation services.
