Behavioural insights combine lessons from behavioural economics, psychology and neuroscience to better understand how humans behave and make everyday decisions.

Behavioural interventions have been applied across a wide range of policy areas in the UK, including pension reform, tax collection, carbon reduction and organ donation.

Examples of promising health and care interventions include:

  • modifying the wording of SMS reminder messages to reduce missed appointments
  • simplifying a hospital prescription form to reduce errors and incomplete information
  • providing cost feedback to reduce use of a discretionary lab test.

Despite this, behavioural interventions are currently under-applied across health and care services.

This interactive webinar:

  • Introduces a behavioural insights framework, with real-life examples of policy and practice applications.
  • Shares the experience of those using behavioural insights in practice at a local level, focusing on how this approach has changed both clinician and patient behaviour.

Presenters:

  • Michael Hallsworth, Director of Health and Tax, Behavioural Insights Team
  • Gautam Mehta, Honorary Consultant and Senior Lecturer, UCL
  • Andrew Fogarty, Consultant Physician and Epidemiologist, University of Nottingham
  • Chair: Sarah Henderson, Associate Director for Improvement, the Health Foundation
