This senior post-doctoral fellowship offers three years’ funding to lead original, applied research dedicated to improving health care in the UK.

The Improvement Science Fellowship includes a unique leadership development programme and facilitated action learning sets, enabling Fellows to develop their potential to become leaders in the field and build practical knowledge about what works to improve health care.

Key facts about Improvement Science Fellowships:

  • Up to five post-doctoral research fellowships are available.
  • We are seeking clinicians, NHS Managers or academics with potential to be the future leaders of improvement science and the essential skills to run major research programmes to improve the quality of health care in the UK.
  • Over three years, Fellows will receive funding for full-time salary and research costs.
  • Fellows will participate in a tailored leadership development programme including group sessions, action learning sets, individual coaching and the opportunity to work with international experts in improvement science.
  • Fellows will need to demonstrate leadership skills and significant research or improvement in practice experience.  
  • A PhD, professional doctorate or an MD is the minimum entry requirement. We encourage applications from clinicians who wish to combine research with continuing clinical practice.

Over the coming months, the Health Foundation is creating an improvement research institute to build on our progress in developing the field of improvement science. The Improvement Science Fellowships will be part of this exciting new venture.

How to apply

If you are interested in applying for the Improvement Science Fellowships programme, please go through the following steps to complete your application.

1. Important supporting information

All applicants must read all supporting information including the Notes for applicants and Frequently asked questions in full before completing the application form.

2. The application process

Applications for this round of Improvement Science Fellowships will be piloting our new online system, AIMS. All applications must be completed and submitted online and can be accessed at AIMS.health.org.uk.

Full guidance on accessing, completing and submitting your application via AIMS can be found in the Applicants user guide. We recommend that you keep a copy of this manual to hand to refer to while you complete your application.

The application form will require you to supply information to meet all the selection criteria outlined in the Notes for applicants.

Applicants must also provide a declaration from their head of department. This needs to be completed and uploaded to Section 8 of the online application.

3. Deadlines

The deadline for all online applications is 23.59 on Tuesday, 5 July 2016. We will not accept submissions after this date.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to participate in an assessment centre on Monday 31 October 2016 as well as an in-person interview on either Tuesday 1 or Wednesday 2 November 2016. The assessment centre and interviews will take place in central London.
