Sessions with Health Foundation speakers

Levelling up requires funding to tackle place-based inequalities and investment in the services that support good health, wellbeing and life chances. But recent research by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS), funded by the Health Foundation, has shown that current funding systems for key public services do not properly reflect differences in needs, and funding changes over recent years have actually exacerbated rather than reduced geographic inequalities.

This session will present new IFS work mapping areas where levels of funding and levels of need are misaligned and the consequences of this will be discussed, particularly in regard to schools funding. Delegates will also hear how different areas are responding to these challenges and look at what changes are needed to Government funding to really make progress in tackling place-based inequalities in areas including health, educational outcomes, lifetime earnings and housing quality.

Chair: Jo Bibby, Director of Health, The Health Foundation

    • Cllr Rachael Blake, Chair, Doncaster Health and Wellbeing Board, Doncaster City Council
    • Deven Ghelani, Director, Policy in Practice
    • Kate Kennally, Chief Executive, Cornwall Council
    • David Philips, Associate Director, Institute for Fiscal Studies
