About me
Charlie is a Quality Improvement Fellow and Trustee at Kidney Research UK.
At the time of his fellowship, Charlie was a Consultant Nephrologist at Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust.
As Chair of the UK Renal Registry 2005-9, Charlie identified several opportunities to incorporate quality improvement (QI) techniques into the measurement of outcomes for kidney patients, including the use of SPC charts to show individual centres’ performance over time.
He is a keen advocate of QI and breaking down barriers to change, and has broad experience of training and helping to spread quality improvement within his organisation.
He has taught quality improvement techniques and ideas to nephrology trainees on numerous courses and seminars, as well as a supervising a PhD student who has performed a systematic review of quality improvement studies in renal medicine. He has also worked with the Royal College of Physicians on teaching QI techniques to Consultant Physicians.
He hopes to build a coalition to drive quality improvement in the field of renal medicine, with the UK Renal Registry, the Renal Association, and the British Renal Society (with multiprofessional involvement) working together.
Charlie became involved first in postgraduate education in renal medicine and then in clinical standards and referral guidelines for patients with chronic kidney disease.
