About me

Clare is a GenerationQ Fellow and Consultant Paediatrician Emergency Medicine at Swansea Bay Health Board.

She was previously a consultant at Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust from 2009-2017.

She has been closely involved in quality improvement for several years. Her role as project champion in a pilot project within the children's emergency department stimulated her interest in quality improvement and change methodology. She has subsequently been involved in work both on the Paediatric and Adult Emergency Care Pathways at Nottingham and Swansea and in Improvement capability and capacity building and medical leadership development.

Clare graduated from the University of Birmingham in 1998 and went on to work in paediatrics and emergency medicine in the West Midlands, Cornwall, Scotland and Australia. She became a consultant in 2009 and took up clinical leadership responsibilities in 2011.

She undertook Generation Q as part of cohort 3, and is continuing the interest in complexity and change conversations by undertaking a Docotorate in Organisational Change commenced in 2017, and is also a member of the Q community.

Clare says that for her, one of the strengths of GenerationQ is that it covers a wide range of organisational theories and allows each person to decide for themselves which are most helpful to them: 'One thing that really struck a chord with me is complexity theory, which stresses the importance of being able to adapt and allow others to shape and influence projects'.

The diversity of the GenerationQ fellows and the Q community is something that Clare also finds particularly valuable: 'It’s rare to be able to meet and work alongside people from so many parts of the health care system. I have learnt a lot, and continue to learn from the other fellows'.
