Darryl Thompson Deputy Director of Nursing and Quality Governance

About me

Darryl is a GenerationQ Fellow and Deputy Director of Nursing and Quality Governance at Derbyshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust.

Darryl leads on quality strategy and quality governance and oversees the CQUIN (Commissioning for Quality and Innovation) programme and response to Care Quality Commission (CQC) actions.

He has co-written the Trust’s quality improvement strategy and leads on the implementation of National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidance. For several years he has also been a standing member of one of the NICE Quality Standards Advisory Committees.

Darryl’s MSc, which included health policy, health economics and research methods, plus his experience in mental health nursing, have given him a strong clinical and quality focus.

He hopes that the GenerationQ fellowship will help further his education around leadership and improvement methodologies. He is interested in developing the sense of partnership between commissioners, providers and users, and sees the fellowship as an opportunity to reflect on this in the context of service developments.

He also hopes that participating in GenerationQ will enable him to effectively carry out an essential part of his role by helping him ‘learn how to best embed clinically focused, relevant, effective, efficient and sustainable improvement within an NHS provider organisation.’

Darryl’s ambition is to lead on quality improvement in a Trust-wide review of community mental health services in Derbyshire, with a particular emphasis on the meaningful engagement of all those involved: ‘The aim of this work is to develop a new and improved model to deliver community mental health services and provide more structured, recovery-focused interventions.’
