About me

David is a GenerationQ Fellow and Associate Medical Director for Quality Improvement, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

He worked as a Consultant Anaesthetist at Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust since 2004, prior to which he was Specialist Registrar at Mersey Deanery.

In 2011, he became Clinical Lead for the Department of Anaestheisa. Aintree University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has 750 inpatient beds and delivers care to a local population of approximately 350,000. David leads the Department of Anaesthesia, which comprises the largest single group of consultants in the hospital. He is responsible for finance, workforce, quality and assurance, and performance management.

As a clinical leader within his organisation, David is looking to further develop his skills as an effective leader and quality improvement catalyst through GenerationQ – within an organisation that has developed an appetite for quality improvement: ‘By developing a network of advisers, mentors and colleagues in health care and other businesses, I hope to be better enabled to lead change in my organisation.

‘I am particularly looking forward to seeing how business organisations transform systems and how there may be common themes in health care.’

Specifically, David would like to lead a pre-operative pathway improvement project within his hospital, which would improve the safety of patients, the quality of patient experience between listing and surgery, and the financial viability of the surgical service. The project would involve introducing pre-operative pathways for patients attending for benign and cancer surgery, with the aim of reducing the risk of non-optimised patients proceeding to surgery. This would also involve integrating the pathway with primary care.
