About me

Jennifer is a GenerationQ Fellow and Medical Director (Operations) at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.

She has been a Consultant Respiratory Physician in Sheffield since 1999. She has been Clinical Director of the Respiratory Medicine department at Northern General Hospital since 2010. She has recently been appointed to the position of Deputy Medical Director and is soon to take up this role. She is a member of the British Thoracic Society Quality Improvement Committee and a peer reviewer for the Royal College of Physicians.

Jennifer is passionate about, and actively involved in, quality improvement. She has led on several projects to introduce new ways of working, and improve patient experience and safety, one of which won the Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust’s Innovation and Service Improvement award: ‘I am inspired by the enthusiasm of all ward staff to improve patient care. I recognise that the best ideas are often from frontline staff, especially when we listen to patient concerns. I have learnt about the importance of collecting data before and after making changes to complex systems.’

Through GenerationQ, Jennifer hopes to further her leadership, management and mentoring skills: ‘I am keen to learn more about a variety of approaches and technical models that are effective in other contexts, so that I can apply them to improving the systems which I can influence in my own team, organisation and beyond.’

In particular, Jennifer wants to bring a quality improvement approach to redesigning the Trust’s emergency admissions process: ‘An improvement in the pathway will positively impact on patient experience and patient safety and, by removing waste, will lead to reduced costs and allow redistribution of resources.’
