Dr Kenneth Donaldson Consultant Nephrologist and Deputy Medical Director

About me

Kenneth is a GenerationQ Fellow and Consultant Nephrologist and Deputy Medical Director at NHS Dumfries and Galloway Health Board.

He is Consultant Nephrologist and Specialty Team Lead for Renal Services at NHS Dumfries and Galloway Health Board and Associate Medical Director for the Acute and Diagnostics Directorate, responsible for managing 120 clinicians and dealing with the majority of complaints from patients and their families.

Kenneth has a particular interest in patient safety and is heavily involved in the Scottish Patient Safety Programme: ‘For two years I chaired the Safer Use of Medicines Network for Healthcare Improvement Scotland, which brought together physicians, pharmacists and nursing staff from all health boards in Scotland to share best practice around medicines safety.’

Through GenerationQ Kenneth hopes to further his leadership skills in order to successfully take forward challenging projects underway at his organisation: ‘There are a number of projects that will require significant medical leadership to enable changes that need to happen – the move to a new hospital and integration of health and social care all set in the context of marked financial restraint.’

Kenneth believes in a person-centred approach and has already led a number of successful programmes relating to improving patient experience. His ambition is to lead on a project to further develop and promote this approach in order to achieve a lasting change in culture: ‘I believe this work would be unique in Scotland and would offer the chance to stand out from other health boards. I am a firm believer that if we can improve the patient experience then we will enhance outcomes, and improve safety and staff experience.’
