Dr Peter Wilson Clinical Director

About me

Peter is a GenerationQ Fellow and Consultant in Paediatric Intensive Care Medicine and Clinical Director of Southampton Children’s Hospital.

He has been Clinical Director of Southampton Children’s Hospital since 2010, where he has 200 direct reports. He led the development of the hospital, including the creation of a dedicated paediatric emergency department, splitting secondary and tertiary paediatrics, and the improvement of estates.

He has been a consultant in paediatric intensive care medicine at the University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust since 2003.

Peter is also President of the Paediatric Intensive Care Society, a position which involves creating national standards, implementing national plans and working with commissioners.

In moving from a primarily clinically based post with some management/leadership responsibilities to a more substantive leadership role, as well as being heavily involved nationally, Peter hopes the GenerationQ fellowship will allow him to build on the regional leadership programmes he has been involved and ensure he can succeed at a national level.

In particular, Peter is interested in learning from different sectors: ‘I feel that the future survival of the NHS is dependent on us learning from the private sector around efficiency and productivity. I also feel that many of the challenges are dealing with the private sector, and understanding different practices and mindsets is essential to improving as a leader.’

During his fellowship, Peter will be leading on the strategic and physical completion of Southampton Children’s Hospital. This will involve the physical separation of the adult and children’s hospitals, and bringing all paediatric services under the managerial control of the children’s hospital.
