About me

Philip is a GenerationQ Fellow and Associate Medical Director at NHS Ayrshire and Arran.

Philip  has been Associate Medical Director at NHS Ayrshire and Arran health board since 2013, with responsibility for University Hospital Crosshouse (UHC). Prior to this, he was Clinical Director for Anaesthesia/Intensive Care Unit at UHC and Lead for the Hospital at Night.

UHC is a large acute district general hospital providing emergency and elective care to a population of approximately 350,000. Philip is responsible for all medical staff and all aspects of medical care in the hospital. Along with the Associate Nurse Director and Assistant Director, he is responsible for the performance of the hospital.

Through GenerationQ, Philip will review the performance of the health board with regards to the re-admission rate to hospital within seven days of discharge, which Philip believes may be an indication of potential problems with effectively managing patient discharge.

He is looking to explore the patient experience and to understand the issues leading to re-admission, and to work with multi-disciplinary teams across Ayrshire to influence change. This project ties into Philip’s interest in how patient-centred care can contribute to the sustainability of quality improvement initiatives.

GenerationQ will provide Philip with a systematic approach to quality improvement, with both theoretical and practical learning: ‘I am convinced that by delivering the best care we can deliver at the first time of asking we will provide the best care possible for patients. I believe that the GenerationQ programme will give me the knowledge, skills and networks to be able to achieve this while I develop and progress as a clinical leader.’
