About me

Sean is a GenerationQ Fellow and Consultant and Clinical Director, Royal Bournemouth Hospital.

For 11 years Sean has worked as a Consultant Physician and Gastroenterologist at Royal Bournemouth Hospital – an acute trust with 700 beds. Between 2009 and 2013 he was also Clinical Director for Medicine, encompassing medicine, emergency department, cardiology, medicine for older people and acute medicine. In 2013 he was appointed Associate Medical Director for Quality and Governance.

Since being in the role, Sean has worked to make clinical quality more central to the hospital’s function. He has started a formal board report and organised regular clinical audit presentations to the board, and with the Director of Improvement leads a clinical quality improvement programme, using sepsis as a specific clinical example of how quality improvement can be used to make measurable progress.

Sean aims to lead ongoing hospital-wide change to promote an environment to support change, innovation and quality: ‘To create permanent change we need to change the environment we are in and how we monitor the issues that we believe are key. With the support of the senior leaders, champions and the engagement of the wider hospital with feedback to highlight the improvements, we can establish a better hospital, providing higher quality care.’

Sean is hoping GenerationQ will support him, and the teams he works in, to drive forward quality improvement and change in the hospital: ‘In many parts of the NHS we need to have a better structure and culture to promote and improve quality, and I hope to be central to that in my hospital.’
