About me

Simon is a Health Foundation Leadership Fellow and Specialist Adviser at the Care Quality Commission.

At the time of his fellowship, Simon was a specialist learning disabilities physiotherapist and Lead Allied Health Professional for South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

Simon graduated from Salford College of Technology in 1984 with a graduate diploma in physiotherapy. He had been in South West Yorkshire Partnership NHS Foundation Trust since 1996 and was the Clinical Lead in the Learning Disabilities service. In this role he had responsibility for developing learning disabilities services and also acts as a leader for Allied Health Professions across the trust.

During his fellowship, Simon was redesigning the service pathway in the learning disabilities service, to make it more effective and centred on the people who use the service. He was also working on the transfer of an eight-bed learning disability low secure unit from Huddersfield into a refurbished building in Wakefield. He also helped to develop the leadership skills of clinicians in the trust, with some of them progressing to take on leadership roles of their own.

Simon retired from the NHS in 2015 and now works for the Care Quality Commission as a Mental Health Act Reviewer in the North of England. He still maintains a keen interest in the rights and issues of adults with learning disabilities in the mental health service.

Simon has an MSc in Collaborative Health Care and MSc in Professional Studies, both from the University of Salford and, following a period of undertaking serious incident investigations, is developing an interest in how Human Factors affect incidents in mental health services..
