About me

Tom is a Health Foundation Leadership Fellow and Nurse Consultant in Psychotherapy and Research, Sheffield Health and Social Care Foundation Trust.

Tom graduated from the University of Reading in 1980 with a BSc (Hons) in Psychology and then qualified as a Registered Mental Nurse in 1985. In 1994, he was accredited as a Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapist and since 2000 had held the position of Honorary Research Fellow at the School of Health and Related Research, University of Sheffield.

In 2002, Tom achieved a PhD from Sheffield Hallam University for research into problem gambling.

Between 2006 and 2011 he was Assistant Clinical Director for the Acute, Community and Primary Care directorate. He provided multidisciplinary clinical leadership in partnership with the Clinical Director and service managers for 12 teams including the five acute inpatient wards, the risis Resolution and Home Treatment teams, four Community Mental Health Teams and the Psychotherapy Service.

Between 2011 and 2014 he was a member of the South Yorkshire Comprehensive Local Research Network Executive, with the lead for mental health research.

Between December 2013 and January 2015 he was Acting Head of the Mental Health Group within ScHARR at the University of Sheffield. This involved providing academic leadership to the group, performance management for academic staff, and representing the group within ScHARR and externally with university and NHS colleagues. 

In his role as Nurse Consultant, Tom led on the delivery and improvement of psychotherapy-informed treatments across the trust. In addition, he played a key role in the development, management and dissemination of psychological therapies research.
