About me

Vivek is a Health Foundation Leadership Fellow and Consultant Physician at Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust, and a non-Executive Director at Portsmouth Hospitals University.

He was born and educated in India, graduating in 1988 from the Armed Forces Medical College at Pune. He completed postgraduate training while serving in Indian Army Medical Corps. This was followed by a Lecturership in the Department of Medicine, where he developed an interest in leadership and managing change through education and training.  A later secondment to the Ministry of Defence (Health Directorate) developed his insight and skills in whole systems working to provide high quality health care.

Vivek moved to the UK in 2006 supported by the Department of Health sponsored International Recruitment schemes. He worked as Consultant in Acute and Hyperbaric Medicine at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and an Honorary Senior Lecturer with the University of Aberdeen.

He was involved in developing Acute Medicine as an emerging specialty that provides early consultant-based care to acutely ill patients. In August 2007, Vivek was asked to lead Acute Medicine and Core Medical Training (CMT) in the North of Scotland. In the National Trainees Survey 2010, this programme was ranked fourth in the UK for overall satisfaction.

Vivek used the Health Foundation’s fellowship award to develop links with primary care to improve the quality of care provided to acutely ill patients. He also secured funding to help medical students prepare for acute medicine. Soon after, he was appointed as an Acute Physician at King's College Hospital, London.

He developed the speciality of Acute Medicine, going from two to 12 consultants, with ambulatory services and close working with hospital specialties and primary care.

Over the last few years he has also taken on the role of Clinical Coordinator of studies at the National Confidential Enquiry into Patient Outcome and Death and contributed to recent publications on quality of care in sepsis, mental and physical healthcare in acute hospitals, to name a few.

He has also published on mental health services, mental health education to medical trainees and predicting re-admissions in elderly patients. Vivek has recently been appointed to represent the Royal College of Physicians and Society for Acute Medicine at the Royal College of Psychiatry on their Psychiatry Liaison Accreditation system. He is also Honorary Senior Lecturer at King's College London leading the curriculum for Acute Medicine in the final year of Medical School.
