Abstract

Over recent years the push for health care to become more person-centred has been mounting, with increasing attention being paid to the importance of people’s experiences of care, and to supporting them to manage their own health. Within the UK National Health Service (NHS), this emphasis is made clear for primary care providers and commissioners both in the direction of travel laid down in the NHS Five Year Forward Review and by the continued inclusion of indicators relating to supporting self-management and ensuring people have a positive experience of care within successive NHS Outcomes Frameworks. However, despite these policy drivers and good intentions, delivering truly person-centred care remains challenging.
