About me

Jay is a Quality Improvement Fellow and Consultant/Associate Medical Director at the University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

He obtained his medical degree in 1993 from Calcutta Medical College (University of Calcutta, India) and trained in emergency medicine (Northern Deanery, UK) and paediatric emergency medicine (The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Canada).

After starting as a Consultant in 2003, Jay became increasingly involved in developing better care for older people and feels that the bio-psycho-social approach and the positive attitude needed to care for these groups is something he combines effortlessly in daily practice.

He served as Darzi Lead for Acute Care, Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland (2009-11) and developed a ‘left shift model’ of acute care for the local healthcare economy. He subsequently set up an intercollegiate group to develop quality standards for care of older people with urgent and emergency care needs (‘Silver Book’).

He has been a member of the College of Emergency Medicine's Clinical Effectiveness Committee and several other national collaborations since 2005. Jay is involved in projects on implementation and clinical effectiveness with the NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research & Care for Leicestershire, Northamptonshire and Rutland. He also worked as a Clinical Director at the NICE-funded National Collaborating Centre for Women’s and Children's Health from 2007-09.

While at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), Jay intended to study methods of developing and implementing a whole systems approach to urgent and emergency care with special emphasis on vulnerable groups including frail older people. He was keen to explore the role of learning and behavioural modification from an individual and organisational perspective as sustainable means of achieving this.
