Responding to the ONS data, 'Characteristics of young people not in education, employment, or training (NEET), England, March 2021', David Finch, Assistant Director in our Healthy Lives Team, said:

'Health plays a role in shaping whether young people can earn or learn, with NEET young people three times more likely than other young people to have been in hospital before for long‑term mental health or behaviour issues.

'The ONS data is a reminder of the real risk of lost potential for a group of today’s young people who are already facing multiple challenges. As we found in our analysis, ensuring that young people can access timely support will be essential if we want to prevent these early setbacks from turning into long‑term disadvantage.'
