Key points

  • In 2024, people aged 21 to 39 years in England were almost twice as likely to have either turned down a job or decided not to apply for a job due to transport-related problems compared to older people.
  • Employment status can affect how likely someone is to have turned down a job or decided not to apply for a job due to transport-related problems.

Problems with transport can prevent people accessing things that contribute to good health. Transport problems can limit job opportunities and income potential.

This chart shows the percentage of people who have turned down a job or decided not to apply for a job in the past 12 months due to problems with transport, split by economic status (unemployed, employed or economically inactive), and age.

  • 8.8% of younger people (aged 21 to 39 years) reported they turned down a job or did not apply for a job due to transport problems compared to 4.6% of older people (aged 40 to 59 years).
  • Unemployed people may be more likely to have either turned down a job or not apply for a job due to transport problems, compared to people who were already in employment. Due to small sample sizes, this analysis should be treated as indicative.

  • The data presented here are weighted estimates from the National Travel Survey, a household survey of personal travel for residents in England.
  • The unweighted sample includes 9,022 participants who are aged 21 to 59 and answered the survey question 'In the past 12 months have you turned down a job or decided not to apply for a job you were interested in due to problems with transport?'.
  • Some economic status groups are based on low sample sizes (all > 10) and as such should be treated as indicative.
